Continuous deployment strategies that actually work at scale

Deployment is not the end of the pipeline

Many teams invest heavily in CI/CD pipelines but treat deployment as a single, undifferentiated step. In reality, how you deploy matters as much as how you build. The right deployment strategy can mean the difference between a five-second rollback and a five-hour outage.

Strategy comparison

Blue-green deployment maintains two identical environments. Traffic switches from blue (current) to green (new) atomically. Rollback is instant — just switch back. The downside: you need double the infrastructure.

Canary deployment gradually shifts traffic from the old version to the new one, starting with 1% and increasing over time. If metrics degrade, traffic automatically shifts back. This is our preferred strategy for high-traffic services.

Rolling update replaces instances one at a time. It is the default in Kubernetes and requires no extra infrastructure. The trade-off is that during the update, two versions coexist, which can cause compatibility issues.

Feature flags as a deployment tool

Feature flags decouple deployment from release. You can deploy code to production with a flag turned off, then enable it for specific users or cohorts. This is especially valuable for large features that take multiple sprints to complete.

We use feature flags for all major features. The deployment pipeline does not care whether the feature is visible to users — it just ensures the code is tested, reviewed, and deployed safely.

What we use

For stateless web services: canary deployments with automated rollback based on error rate and latency p99. For database migrations: forward-only migrations with backward-compatible schema changes. For infrastructure: blue-green with DNS-based traffic switching.
