Why your digital transformation is probably a digitisation project

Why your digital transformation is probably a digitisation project

The confusion

Every CEO wants digital transformation. Every vendor sells digital transformation. But ask ten executives to define it, and you will get ten different answers — most of which describe digitisation, not transformation.

Digitisation is converting analog processes to digital ones. Scanning paper forms into PDFs. Replacing phone orders with a web form. These are incremental improvements to existing processes.

Digital transformation is rethinking how technology changes the fundamental way an organisation creates value. It is not about doing the same things faster — it is about doing different things.

A useful test

Ask yourself: "Are we using technology to do the same thing more efficiently, or are we using technology to do something we could not do before?"

If the answer is the former, you are digitising. If it is the latter, you are transforming. Both have value, but they require different strategies, different investments, and different measures of success.

What transformation actually looks like

A traditional insurance company processes claims through a multi-week manual review. A transformed insurance company uses AI to assess claims in real time, offers instant payouts for simple cases, and routes complex cases to human adjusters with pre-populated context.

The difference is not the technology itself — it is the rethinking of the entire business process around what technology makes possible.

Where to start

Start with customer pain points, not technology capabilities. Identify the moments where your current process creates friction, delay, or frustration. Then ask whether technology can eliminate that friction entirely — not just reduce it.

The organisations that succeed at digital transformation share one trait: they treat technology as a strategic capability, not a support function. That shift in mindset is the hardest part, and it is where most efforts stall.
